Directed by Robert Zemeckis.
Contemporary high schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) doesn't have the most pleasant of lives. Browbeaten by his principal at school, Marty must also endure the acrimonious relationship between his nerdy father (Crispin Glover) and his lovely mother (Lea Thompson), who in turn suffer the bullying of middle-aged jerk Biff (Thomas F. Wilson), Marty's dad's supervisor. The one balm in Marty's life is his friendship with eccentric scientist Doc (Christopher Lloyd), who at present is working on a time machine. Accidentally zapped back into the 1950s, Marty inadvertently interferes with the budding romance of his now-teenaged parents. Our hero must now reunite his parents-to-be, lest he cease to exist in the 1980s. It won't be easy, especially with the loutish Biff, now also a teenager, complicating matters. Beyond its dazzling special effects, the best element of Back to the Future is the performance of Michael J. Fox, who finds himself in the quagmire of surviving the white-bread 1950s with a hip 1980s mindset. Back to the Future cemented the box-office bankability of both Fox and the film's director, Robert Zemeckis, who went on to helm two equally exhilarating sequels. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Jonathan Levine’s crowd-pleasing (in terms of audience awards at festivals, not in terms of uplifting Hollywood endings) film The Wackness opens in limited release tomorrow. In case you haven’t noticed from the ads and the soundtrack, it takes place in the New York City of 1994, a special time for the place because Rudy Giuliani had just become mayor and was beginning to clean up the city, Goldie Wilson-stylee (OK, not really Goldie Wilson-stylee, but who doesn’t love a good BTTF reference?). NYC in the ’90s was quite special for me. It’s when I moved here. And moved here a second time (I’ve since moved here a third time), and watching The Wackness made me nostalgic for the decade. It also made me think of some of the other films from or set in that period, a number of which kind of define my experience with the city. 1990: Quick Change - It’s a bit ironic that this comedy, which features Bill Murray putting down the city non-stop, is the movie that really represents NYC on film ... "A couple weeks ago, I was talking with someone about a mutual friend's wedding. "What date is the wedding?" my friend asked. "They're getting married on Star Wars day!" I replied As a youngster with a burgeoning interest in films, I would go to the library and look up facts about my favorite films. I remember looking up titles in the Facts on File and finding little bits of trivia like the release date of a film. At one point, I had compiled a list of Steven Spielberg films and their release dates. I can remember that 'Gremlins' and 'Ghostbusters' came out in June, 1984, but not the specific dates. I can't even recall exactly when in the summer of 1985 that 'Back to the Future' was released, and that's pretty much my stock answer for my favorite movie of all-time. But the date for 'Star Wars' sticks. The one Spielberg film that I can distinctly remember a release date for is 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial' - June 11, 1982. Perhaps that's just because my sister's birthday falls on the ... " [More]

"Marty McFly was lucky to hang around a mad scientist. That's a dream neighbor for bored kids to go to after eating breakfast cereal in front of the Saturday Morning Cartoons. What an adventure of a lifetime, to time- travel without losing body parts along the way! I recognized the name "Mc Fly " right away when I saw the movie Just My Luck. I thought that British boy band would be a Back to the Future type band. I was wrong. But now I have 3 of their CD's. " [More]

Back to the Future is Robert Zemeckis/Steven Spielberg storytelling at its best, with humor, action, special effects and a Huey Lewis soundtrack rolled together in a package that proves "Fun" and "PG" are not antonyms. Michael J. Fox, then known mostly for his role on TV's Family Ties, is a teenage everyman who fulfills the dream of escaping his go-nowhere home life and dorky parents, only to find them transformed by his own hand. Supporting him is Christopher Lloyd, let loose to do what he does best -- act like a complete nut -- in the role of mad scientist Doc Brown. The film makes the most of the notion that Fox's Marty McFly can change the future, and successfully pays off on an astounding number of plot angles. Marty not only assures his own continued existence but changes the makeup of his family and community by helping his dad grow a backbone or (if you're watching carefully) altering the name of the local mall. More than just a series of anachronisms, Back to the Future has a real heart. You suffer along with Marty's teenaged dad, George, at the depredations of his tormentor, Biff, and get a genuine surge of adrenaline and pride when George finally takes his stand. Could this event lead to a changed life? In Back to the Future it does, believably. In fact, the film has more in common with the sentimental fantasy of It's a Wonderful Life than with the often-mindless action of the science fiction pictures that followed, proving that bigger budgets and more elaborate special effects didn't exactly lead to a higher-quality summer blockbuster. ~ Matthew Doberman, All Movie Guide
