"Umm ... I'm not sure I liked this. I can't say I didn't like it, but I'm not going to endorse it either. I'm not entirely sure it deserved the rave reviews it got from Richard Roeper(when will I learn to stop listening to him??). Jeez ... both my brother and I felt there was something missing from this film ... we're pretty sure it was the screenplay that was poorly done. Having said that though, it was written by Tony Gilroy ... same guy that scripted the Bourne films (or, that seems to be what I remember, don't quote me on that) ... and he directed this well. And that is really the problem ... the greatness of the direction surpasses a kind of lame duck script ... not that the writing was bad, because it wasn't ... the story was just lacking period. I picked Short Cuts because it came with a book of the Raymond Carver short stories that the film was based around. The stories are great .... you should read some. There are only a couple things I feel I can say at the moment about the film. So here they are:1. I loved it ... I didn't notice its length (3 hours) at all. The cast was amazing, the special features on the Criterion disc were great ... especially the conversation between Tim Robbins and Robert Altman, and the documentary on the making of was excellent as well. 2. I'm not sure why more people haven't compared Crash (Paul Haggis) with the much better Short Cuts. Now, you may be saying in your head if you've seen them both, "Julia, Crash and Short Cuts are two completely different films with completely different plots and subject matter" ... I disagree. They couldn't be more similar. Bot ... " [More]
